Dataset: Social World of Danish School Children, 1980

The data material was collected with a view to undertaking an analysis of young people's social involvement, i.e. young people's impressions, attitudes and conduct in relation to their social environment - the political sphere, the work sphere, school, their circle of friends and their family. #The complex of problems chosen for examination has necessitated a typology made up of social stratification criteria for the classification of social groups. The basis of this restructured typology was the quinary classification of social groups used by the Danish National Institute of Social Research, which operates with the following criteria: education, occupational position (worker, salaried employee, self-employed) and number of subordinates (degree of influence, social status). Several studies - Kohn's analysis, among others - have confirmed the opinion that the education variable and other objective social background factors such as position and job content are the most important criteria of stratification in this context - and also as indicators of the political status of their parents in society - whereas subjective criteria of status are not considered to be of equal importance. The classification of social groups has been cahnged compared with the criteria used by the Danish National Institute of Social Research, as education has been given a higher priority at the expense of the criterion 'number of subordinates' so that, for instance, a lengthy theoretical education is a prerequisite of being placed in the top social group (comparable with I + II in the classification system of the Danish National Institute of Social Research), irrespective of number of subordinates. By the same token, self-employed people without an education are placed in social group 3 (comparable with IV in the classification system used by the Institute), irrespective of number of subordinates. Finally, job content has received special consideration as regards unskilled people, for which reason domestic helpers and assistant nurses have been placed in social group 3, irrespective of educational background. Please note that the classification into social groups has not been based solely on the status of the father. The parent with the higher social group status has been used as reference person. #Besides social group classification, it is possible to analyse young people according to age group, sex, and occupation of parents (again the parent with the higher social group status has been chosen). #The data material includes questions about the attitude of young people to parents, school, and friends; questions about attitude to political issues, social conditions, and democratic participation; questions about interest in mass media, cultural activities for young people, and potential interest as well as active participation in social and political activities; also questions about opportunities for young people of treatment and discussion of their personal problems. #The data material has been used in connection with the writing of a thesis for the Institute of Social Studies at Odense University. This thesis is available from the university library or from the DDA. It includes a complete argumentation in favour of the classification system of social groups used (chapter 5). #The survey deals with 8th, 9th and 10th form pupils at Nyborg Efterskole (a continuation school), Risingskolen and Højmeskolen in Odense, and Gram skole in the south of Jutland (3 primary schools)
